Anonymous asked:I experienced something at work the other day. I work at brandy melleville. the store is purposely targeted for small girls between the sizes 0-9. I work there because i like the clothes and the people.. A heavy women came in asking if we had a plus size section. i apologized and told her no. and our shirts are one size fits most. all the sudden she became enraged. telling me how horrible it was i work for a store that 'hates fat people' what is FA actually teaching besides self pity
I was going to write a response that was nice and mention how you have very little control over the clothes that the store you work at sells. Then you had to end your message with some convoluted thin privilege denying bullshit.
Do you know what it is like to walk into 95% of stores KNOWING that they probably don’t have your size? Do you know what it is like to have to ask a head of time if the clothes a store sells sell will fit you? Do you know what it is like to not only openly acknowledge that your body is different but that you know a store probably doesn’t give two shits about you being their customer?
I’m going to guess not, especially if you think that woman becoming “enraged” was purely due to self pity. It sounds more like she is sick of dealing with bullshit. Bullshit you clearly support by not questioning why you are working for and selling clothes at a store that doesn’t care about anyone above a size 9. By not questioning how even having a job at that store comes with a great deal of privilege. I’m not even expecting you to not work there, we all need to pay our bills, but don’t think for a second this has anything to do with fat people being full of self pity. Your response to this has everything to do with you being ignorant as fuck.
In case anyone is still confused. This is not an appropriate response when working in a position of privilege. Work through your shit, don’t blame people for being justifiably angry when they are discriminated against..
"The store is purposefully targeted to small girls between sizes 0-9"
I love how the anon says this like it’s a fucking specialty store or something, because somehow other stores don’t cater to size 0-9.. When you cater to size 0-9 you’re not a specialty store, you’re any fucking run-of-the-mill clothing store.
This woman didn’t walk into a bait-and-tackle shop and demand to buy a sewing machine.. She walked into a clothing store in hopes of buying clothing. Frustration at not being able to do a simple thing that a good portion of the population can do and which we all NEED to do,which is buy clothes, because the product is simply unavailable in 95% of stores is not self-pity.. It’s a pretty reasonable fucking complaint.
